Advanced Practical Aspects Of Abdominal Ultrasonography
Hands-on Course

Candidates:
Physicians, clinicians, medical professionals, and cross-training technologists interested in the sonographic manifestations of normal and pathologic conditions of abdominal organs.

Aim:
The purpose of this course is to provide students with advanced knowledge, techniques and procedures for evaluating the abdominal organs by case study review. Students will develop an advanced knowledge base to work from on how normal and abnormal abdominal anatomy and physiology appears with ultrasound.

Course Description:
This course presents advanced study of abdominal sonography with concentration on case study reviews of normal anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, including abnormal etiology and diagnostic techniques.

Course Learning Objectives:
Through attending this course, the participant should be able to:
• appreciate the relationship between acoustic physics and the sonographic representation of tissue
• recognize the acoustic representation of normal abdominal anatomy and identify pathologies of the abdomen from ultrasound images
• understand and discuss the capabilities and limitations of ultrasound evaluation of the abdomen
• Recognize and identify the sonographic appearance of normal anatomic structures, including anatomic variants and normal Doppler patterns.
• Discuss the patient history and physical examination, related imaging, laboratory, and functional testing procedures.
• Discuss clinical differential diagnosis.
• Discuss the role of ultrasound in patient management.
• Discuss sonographic and Doppler patterns in clinical diseases.
Topics Covered:
This course will cover the protocols involved with performing an ultrasound on the following areas:
• Adrenal glands
• Pancreas
• Gastrointestinal
• Great vessels
• Lymph nodes
• Colour-flow doppler
• Ultrasound guided aspirates and biopsies on phantoms
• Normal versus abnormal for intra-abdominal structures
• Introduction to sonographic appearance of common diseases
• Measuring, annotating and normal dimensions of intra-abdominal organs
